    Derick Mattern studied philosophy and French at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

    He also holds MFAs in poetry, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in literary translation, from the University of Iowa, where he was an Iowa Arts Fellow. A translator of contemporary Turkish poetry, Derick's work has received fellowships from the British Centre for Literary Translation, the Banff International Literary Translation Centre, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His translations of poems by Haydar Ergülen, Şükrü Erbaş, and Cenk Gündoğdu have appeared widely, in Modern Poetry in Translation, World Literature Today, Berlin Quarterly, Gulf Coast, and Copper Nickel, and elsewhere.
